Austin Texas

The Last Waltz Revisited

Last Friday we gathered at Barracuda Austin for a night of unforgettable singing and dancing to one of music’s most legendary farewell concerts.

The Last Waltz was a farewell concert by the Canadian-American group called, The Band. With help from renowned director, Martin Scorsese, a documentary of the same name was made to capture The Band’s last show. Joined on stage by countless special guests including Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell and more, The Last Waltz has become one of the greatest documentary concert films ever made.

Renditions of The Last Waltz have been produced all over the country for years since the original concert happened Thanksgiving night 1976. Over the years, concerts featuring some of Austin’s great musicians have been held at places like One-2-One Bar and Bass Concert Hall. The documentary has also been screened at Alamo Drafthouse and AFS in years past. This most recent production was held at Barracuda in downtown Austin on Friday, November 23, 2018 and we were thrilled to be a part of it.

Members from various Austin bands gathered on stage to pay tribute to The Band’s concert documentary, The Last Waltz on Nov. 23, 2018 at Barracuda Austin.

Members from various Austin bands gathered on stage to pay tribute to The Band’s concert documentary, The Last Waltz on Nov. 23, 2018 at Barracuda Austin.

Hosted by Do512, Maletilla, and Hot Burrito and sponsored by Nine Banded Whiskey, members from local bands gathered on stage to pay tribute to The Band’s farewell concert. Members from Go Fever, Big Bill, Star Parks, Bryce Clifford & Brother Superior, Warm Sugar, Bop English, Sailor Poon, Loteria, PR Newman, Otis the Destroyer, Wild Bill and The Lost Knobs, Batty Jr., Magic Rockers of Texas, and many more banded together to honor some of their musical influences.

With no introduction needed, the night kicked off with Taylor Wilkins of Otis the Destroyer. As each musician was called up on stage to lend their hand in history, they somehow managed to transport the audience back to the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco that 1976 Thanksgiving night. The passion from the musicians on stage and the love from the crowd could be felt as the energy filled the air. Performance after performance left the crowd wanting more, and as the night progressed and came to a close, Austin’s local musicians delivered a closing performance the audience won’t soon forget.

This night was the perfect reminder of how far music can travel through time and how strong it can be felt in people of all generations. Music is timeless and it knows no boundaries.

To all the musicians who shared their talents on stage that night, to the crowd that brought their dancing shoes and showed their moves, to all the hosts and brilliant minds behind the scenes, and lastly, to The Band, we raise a glass of Nine Banded Whiskey.

Cheers!

“Smoking & Drinking”

Tailgate season is in full swing and we are celebrating with the best of the best, Rosso & Flynn.

The Nine Banded Whiskey x Rosso & Flynn partnership dates back long before tailgate season, but it always circles around two things:

Smoking (meats) & Drinking (whiskey).

Rosso & Flynn is a modern day butcher shop for locally-sourced & sustainably raised smoked meats. We first got together to launch an influencer event for food bloggers. It was quite a hit.. After that, we couldn’t get enough. They loved our whiskey & we loved their chicken wings, prime rib, and whole smoked pig.

Before the Longhorns blowout against USC last weekend, we kicked off game day with a bang.

Rosso & Flynn set up a smorgasbord of fine meats and we brought the Burnt Orange Old Fashioneds. To top it off, they created their own Nine Banded Whiskey wing sauce.. Be sure to check out the recipe!

Not only was it game day in Austin, but it was also a day to celebrate one of our favorite organizations, The Playing for Change Foundation. Playing for Change is a global nonprofit that connects & inspires the world through music and is very close to our hearts at Nine Banded Whiskey. We brought in Akin Francis to celebrate with live reggae music & raise funds to support education through music around the world.

If you can’t tell, we had a blast.. But it’s only the beginning.

Join us all season long for good times & great whiskey.

dO512’s Sound & Cinema: Midsummer Nights Series

Do512’s Summer Series: Sound & Cinema

It’s been quite the summer so far..

We kicked off the season with an unforgettable midsummer nights series with Do512.

Each Wednesday in July & August we gathered on the lawn of the city’s best sunset spot for a night of film, fun, and live music.

Our friends over at Alamo Drafthouse brought in an outdoor movie theater to the Long Center lawn that stretched out overlooking the fine cityscape that we all know and love. Each week kicked off with food trucks, cocktails, and a whole lot of family fun before leading into a different genre pairing of a local musician + a classic film.

We started off with “Wayne’s World” showcasing the rockin’ Billy King & The Bad Bad Bad and moved into the second week with “Grease” featuring the smooth vibes of Huggy & The Feel Goodz.

After that we moved into a little more upbeat action with “Mean Girls” kicking off the night with the sounds of Go Fever and finished off the summer nights series with “O Brother Where Art Thou” and some Texas country punk with Rattlesnake Milk.

Our Wednesdays have been filled with puppy dogs, snow cones, whiskey cocktails and some killer Austin sunsets. It was an honor to be a part of such a community driven experience. Major shoutout to all the Texas brands who helped bring this all to life. We cannot wait for next year!

It’s all in the water..

Recently, we gathered as a team to collect water.

As I’m sure you know, one of the main ingredients in our fine whiskey is limestone filtered, Texas Hill Country spring water.

Nine_Banded_Whiskey_Austin_Texas_01.jpg

We traveled about 60 miles west of Austin city limits to our ranch in Mason, Texas.

We brought steak, music, and a whole lot of whiskey.

The first night we all gathered together under the stars to listen to a little bit of live music. After all, it wouldn’t be a Nine Banded get together without some guitars.. One of our favorite Austin musicians, Tony Kamel, joined us to play alongside one of our very own, Aaron Beavers.

We shared a lot of laughs, a little whiskey, and enjoyed the sweet sounds of the guitar strings.

The next morning we all went out to the spring to collect water to bring back to our distillery. We loaded up the truck with the freshest water one could possibly imagine to fulfill one of our largest orders to date.

It was a full weekend of fishing, fun and debauchery.

If you haven’t gotten to know our Nine Banded Whiskey team yet, you will surely want to.. We are an eclectic group of crazy & kind individuals who know how to have a really good time. Each and every single one of us play our part in making this company so special.

That’s exactly what we stand for – the coming together of all kinds of folks to have a good time. At the root of it all, we are a team.. and a damn good one.

Expanding Our Horizons

We’ve been a little quiet lately..

But we have had something up our sleeves.

Although we can’t say too much..

We have been roaming a little bit further from our native Texas routes.

Can you guess where we popped up this weekend?

Here’s a hint…

Nine_Banded_Whiskey_Austin_Texas_los_angeles_23.jpg

There was a little sand..

& whiskey.

We’re keeping things under the radar for now, but stay tuned..

There are big things in the works for this Austin whiskey company.

Where do you want to see us pop up next?

Let us know in the comments below!

The Underground Speakeasy

Tucked away in an underground greenhouse, you will find a secret little spot.

With a line out the door, one can only guess what’s going on inside..

As you wait amongst your new friends, little glimpses come through – a disco ball spinning and candles dripping.. The rest remains a mystery.

When it comes your turn, you are called to enter.

Dimly lit and inviting, the small brick building calls you in.

The bartender asks just one question, “neat or on the rocks?”

The Foster girls did it again.

They transformed the night into a magical experience gathering groups from near and far together for a night of music and mysticism.

We celebrated their two year anniversary. These ladies are our long time partners.. We have been along the entire ride from R&B get downs to sultry house shows and jazzy speakeasy sippin’. We’ve done nice dinners and casual hangs, but it’s never been anything short of incredible.

Here’s to you Foster ATX. Thank you for bringing the community together and for making us look so incredibly sexy.

Take a look into some of our fun together over the past two years –

Sittin’ in Sessions

Nine Banded Whiskey & Native Hostels came together to put on a series..

We have gathered local musicians to help us celebrate Wednesday nights that roll into early Thursday morning.

We gathered some of Austin’s favorite musicians and invited them into the Native Hostel’s living room. If you have never been to the Native, picture this –  dimly lit, red suede sofas, dancing all night, coffee early morning..

What was once an old tool shop, has now become a staple of the Austin experience. This bar, restaurant, hostel and music venue loves to celebrate all types of experiences from yoga classes to salsa lessons and slumber parties. Our favorite? Sittin’ In Sessions. Your Wednesday night way to wind down, check out some killer music and get to know a few folks you never knew before.

The first session kicked off with the Peterson Brothers.. This classic Austin band of brothers filled the room with sounds of blues and funk mixed together and mashed up to fit their own groovy tune. The room was swaying, singing, and sippin’.

The next Sittin’ In Sessions featured some of our new favorites.. The electric beats of The Oysters kicked off the night for the jam, punk, rock n roll sounds of Go Fever.

Marmalakes and Teddy Glass were the featured artists of the third round of Sittin’ In Sessions. These guys came in and brought the room to life.

Our last session moved into the smooth sounds of KP and the boom boom opening up for another soulful superstar, James Robinson. Robinson filled the room with notes rivaling those of iconic Curtis Mayfield, Smokey Robinson, and Donny Hathaway. His music brings together influences of jazz, gospel, soul, rhythm & blues, and funk.

The next round of Sittin’ In Sessions are coming up..

July 25 kicks off series two with our dear friends The Bishops

August 8th will showcase Jake Lloyd and The Point.

Join us for our bi-weekly, Wednesday Sittin’ In Sessions.

Let us know if the comments below which musicians you would like to see at the next Sittin’ In Sessions.
